Equipment, furniture, fabric, books, uniforms, media—the Hinson History Room is the largest repository of Kannapolis history and is located inside A.L. Brown High School. Kannapolis was founded in 1906. After the stakes went in the ground for the new mill, Old Trim, a famous mule from Rowan County dragged (with another mule) the first load of wood—over miles through the mud—to the work site. J W Cannon envisioned and built a mill town where workers could easily get to work on foot, would have ample opportunities for recreation in their down time, and had places to learn and worship in. Work was hard at the mill for adults and children alike. After the war, returning military who were employees at the mill, could get a house in "GI Town." See what post-war life was like for returning veterans and mill workers as curators take you on an immersive journey through this living museum. The YMCA was the heartbeat of Kannapolis. At one time it had the largest membership in the east. Dinners seating five hundred, an auditorium seating 1,400, and finery worthy of First Lady, Eleanor Roosevelt's visit. Ladies, do you remember going in through the back entrance of the YMCA? Was the rumor true—did the boys really swim in their birthday suits?! What was your favorite movie and memories of the theatre at the Y? the Hinson History room is full of equipment, furniture, media and memorabilia from every facet of Kannapolis history, right up to present day? The story of Kannapolis is inextricably linked to the rise and fall of Cannon Mills, a textile giant that shaped the town's identity and provided livelihoods for generations. Work in Kannapolis, for much of the 20th century, meant the mills. The rhythmic clang of machinery, the scent of cotton hanging heavy in the air, and the constant shift changes defined the town's rhythm and the lives of its people. Work in the mills was demanding, often involving long hours and repetitive tasks. The "Dope Wagon," offering snacks and drinks, provided a welcome respite from the rigors of the workday.  Kannapolis' sense of community has been with us from the start—in sports, schools, church, parades and celebrations. The establishment of the NCRC signaled a new chapter in Kannapolis' history, shifting the focus from textiles to scientific research and innovation. This transformation brought a renewed sense of hope for the future. The latest chapter in our city's history is about revitalization. In Kannapolis, this led to the development of a unique neighborhood, constructed by Cannon Mills, specifically for GIs and their families. Cannon Mills innovated by constructing two trial homes using a new construction method designed to build a modest dwelling within a day. Demand for this quick yet attractive solution led to fifty prefabricated, four-room homes being built during the winter of 1946. Suitable for newlyweds or small families, eventually one hundred homes were built on land that is now in and around Village Park.  One of those original houses, built in 1946, was fully restored and is now the GI Memorial House—a rare, example of post-war mill village housing.  The GI Memorial House is more than just a dwelling. It's an interactive time capsule tucked away on King Street, offering a glimpse into the lives of a generation who not only fought overseas but lived, worked and built futures in Kannapolis. See how families lived in just 20 x 24 sq. ft.—the original tiny homes!  Are you a history buff, a family storyteller, or just curious about what life felt like when Kannapolis was a mill town just after World War II? Step back in time with the Kannapolis History Associates guides at the GI Memorial House. As you walk through the doors of the GI Memorial House and step into the 1940’s, every room tells a story of post-war optimism, family life, and daily routines shaped by limited resources and strong community ties. The furnishings, appliances, music—and even the solar dryer—speak to a life defined by simplicity and hard work. Every detail invites you to look, wonder, and even remember. It’s an immersive experience. Open the first Sunday of each month from 2pm - 5pm between Memorial Day and Labor Day. We serve as the caretakers of a remarkable collection of artifacts, records, and memorabilia that showcase life in Kannapolis—past and present. From physical newspapers that span decades to high school yearbooks and memorabilia from Cannon Mills, our museum is a treasure trove of the city’s legacy. As a recognized 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, our mission is to collect and safeguard artifacts, records, and historical treasures that tell the unique story of our city. We document Kannapolis’ evolution from its humble beginnings, preserving the spirit and events that shape our identity today. Through our educational tours and exhibits, we actively engage the community, promoting involvement and pride in our shared history. Over the years, we have installed and dedicated several historical markers, each commemorating significant figures and landmarks integral to Kannapolis’ heritage. One of our most heartfelt projects is the preservation of the [GI Memorial House](/the-gi-memorial-house-in-kannapolis-nc), a cherished relic from the post-World War II era. Built for returning veterans, around 100 of these four-room homes formed what became affectionately known as "GI Town." As development spread, some of these homes were relocated. We proudly saved and meticulously restored one of the last remaining houses, dedicating it to all veterans in October 1992. Today, this historic gem provides visitors with a tangible glimpse into life in the 1940s. The Kannapolis History Associates' primary support comes from annual memberships and generous community donations. We warmly invite community partners and benefactors to join us in preserving Kannapolis' legacy.
